I have seen people spray soapy water but haven't tried it yet myself. That may just be for aphids though? For slugs I am using organic pellets, which have a 'natural' chemical that won't harm the birds, they seem to be working.
(I am a novice gardener, hope to know more by the end of the summer!)
sad plants. it's so sad when they get so sad. I moved to Denver 2 years ago from northern california. Foolishly I planted last weekend because it was consistently in the 70s and 80s. So I planted. And then it snowed. And now all my plants are sad, too. So sad, so sad. Check out http://www.yougrowgirl.com/. She's a whiz in the garden and has some really terrific pointers.

Doesn't beer work to attract snails (it looks like you might have some of that on hand;)? I'll talk to my green thumb and get back to you.

I've heard that you can make one using things like chillies, garlic etc... not sure how successful it is though.
